Arriving at Dubai Airport: What Happens, Step by Step
From the moment the aircraft doors open to the moment you are in your car — the order of events at Dubai International, and where delays usually come from.
The order of events
Arrival at Dubai International follows the same sequence every time. Knowing it makes the difference between feeling rushed and simply walking through.
- Off the aircraft and along the concourse — at Terminal 3 this walk can be long, and a train ride between concourses is normal.
- Passport control. Many nationalities receive a visa on arrival; others need the visa arranged beforehand.
- Baggage reclaim, then customs — the green channel unless you are carrying goods to declare.
- The arrivals hall, then the car park or pickup area, which is a separate walk again.
Where the time actually goes
Very little of the waiting happens where travellers expect it. Passport control queues build when several wide-body flights land together, which at Dubai peaks late at night and in the early hours. Baggage from a full aircraft takes time regardless of how fast you walked. And finding the right pickup point in a terminal the size of Terminal 3 defeats plenty of first-time visitors. A family with children, an elderly parent, or a tight onward schedule turns each of these into real pressure.
What a representative changes
With meet & assist, someone is already inside the terminal before your aircraft lands, holding a name sign at the gate or at the agreed point. They walk you to passport control and stay with you through the formalities, handle the luggage, take you through customs and hand you to your driver at the car. Before you land
A short checklist that removes most arrival problems:
- Check your terminal on your ticket. Terminal 2 is on the opposite side of the airfield from Terminals 1 and 3.
- Know whether your nationality gets a visa on arrival, or arrange the visa in advance.
- Agree the meeting point in writing — gate, air bridge or arrivals hall — rather than on the day.
- If someone is collecting you, give them the flight number, not just the time; arrival times move.
